If you ever hope to please a woman in the bedroom, you need to take note of their individual preferences.

It’s basic advice, but new research suggests the received wisdom is good practice.

Researchers found that over 1,000 women aged between 18 and 94, reported a range of preferences for genital touch, location, pressure, shape and pattern.

The study, published in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy, found that while women as a group like a range of different stimulations, individual women had very specific needs – 41 per cent of which preferred one style of touch.

The study results challenge the mistaken, but common, notion that there are universal ‘sex moves that work’ for everyone.

On the other hand, the data also make clear that there are certain styles of touch that are more commonly preferred by women, emphasizing the value of studying sexual pleasure – and not just sexual problems.

This means that prospective lovers should communicate about the stimulation that works for them, and hope to learn to replicate those specific actions.

The study provides the first U.S. nationally representative data on routes to orgasm during intercouse for women.

It noted that nearly 75 per cent of women reported clitoral stimulation was necessary for intercourse-orgasms, or helped their orgasms feel better.

Meanwhile, 18 per cent noted that vaginal penetration alone was sufficient for orgasm.

The study’s findings were drawn together by the research team on the ‘OMGYES Pleasure Report’.

OMGYES is a research company advocating for scientists to explore the gap in scientific and public understanding of female pleasure.
