In the world of supercars and sports cars boasting of bigger engine displacement which is powerful and performance oriented, smallest engines have a niche for themselves. The bigger capacity engine boasts of top speed or sprinting from 0 – 100km/h; however, the smallest engines boasts of fuel efficiency, cheaper cost and the ease of driving.
Here are the five of the smallest capacity engines in production cars:
5. Smart ForTwo (898cc)
The Smart ForTwo comes with two engine options and the smallest is the 898cc turbocharged unit. This engine produces 89bhp and 136Nm of torque.

With a two-door configuration, the Smart ForTwo ispowerful and can possibly sprint faster than the Fiat 500 TwinAir; however, the Fiat can outrun the Smart ForTwo on the top speed.
4. Fiat 500 0.9 Twin Air (875cc)
Fiat has always been known for producing small cars andmanaged to develop a two-cylinder car. Fiat calls it the Twin Air with the engine capacity of 84bhp and 145Nm of peak torque.
The Twin Air power plant is turbocharged and comes with multipoint injection. The Fiat 500 Twin Air can sprint from 0 – 100 km/h in 11 seconds and can hit a top speed of 172km/h. The car has got a good EuroNCAP ratings on the safety aspect and is equipped with modern features like the Electronic Stability Program (ESP).
3. Maruti Suzuki Celerio Diesel (793cc)

India has always been the ecosystem to develop small cars with small capacity engines. Maruti Suzuki is at the forefront in designing the small cars and is the largest automobile manufacturer in India.
The Maruti Suzuki Celerio is powered by two cylinders and is the only diesel unit in this list. The engine with a cubic capacity of 793cc churns out 47bhp and 125Nm of peak torque and is paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The Celerio is offered with dual airbags and ABS.
2. Caterham Seven 160 (660cc)
Caterham is known for producing lightweight sports cars and the Seven 160 does not come as a surprise. The car can top out at an impressive 162km/h with the three cylinders of the 660cc engine.
The engine is tied to a 5-speed manual gearbox and the power is sent to the rear wheels. The Suzuki engine can churn out 80bhp and 107Nm of peak torque and weighs 490kg. The Caterham Seven 160 is a classic inspired designed car yet has the power of a modern car.
1. Tata Nano (624cc)
Touted to be the cheapest car in the world eight years back; however, the Nano has run itself into rough weather and the sales have been declining in the recent past. The Tata Nano is a practical and spacious car with a rear engine.
Tata Motors have developed the engine with two cylinders and has the cubic capacity of 624 and can develop 37bhp and 51Nm of torque. The Tata Nano can sprint to a top speed of 105km/h.
*Note – The Japanese Kei Car is a capable mention in this list with smallest engine capacity; however, these are manufactured only for the Japanese market alone.
