Pete Buttigieg and Beto O’Rourke’s feud boils over at the Democratic debate
“I don’t need lessons from you on courage, political or personal.”

The feud between South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke boiled over on Tuesday during the Democratic debate.


The disagreement between the two, which began in the wake of the September debate, centered on conflict over a mandatory assault weapons buyback, a policy that O’Rourke has touted but struggled to fully explain. While O’Rourke has argued that a buyback would help curb gun violence, Buttigieg has previously called it a “shiny object” and did not hold back from reiterating this argument again on Tuesday.

“Congressman, you just made it clear you are don’t know how this is actually going to take weapons off the streets,” the mayor said Tuesday, suggesting that O’Rourke was pushing for a “purity test” instead of more pragmatic policy. “If you can develop the plan further, I think we can have a debate about it. But we can’t wait.”

In response, O’Rourke argued that he does in fact have a plan and that beyond buybacks, he supports other gun reforms, like red flag laws and universal background checks. O’Rourke also worked to make the case that aggressive reforms are the best way to serve the 40,000 annual gun violence victims and countless activists he says he is advocating for.


However, when pushed on how he would implement a mandatory assault weapons buyback on Tuesday, O’Rourke stopped short of explaining how he would confiscate weapons from people who refrain from voluntarily turning them in to law enforcement.

Instead, he tried to flip Buttigieg’s attack on its head: “Let’s … lead and not be limited by the polls and consultants and focus groups,” he said.

The mayor responded forcefully by noting that he didn’t need a lecture from O’Rourke.

“The problem isn’t the polls, the problem is the policy,” he said. “I don’t need lessons from you on courage, political or personal.”

The exchange between the two lawmakers was the most high-profile back-and-forth they’ve had on the subject of gun control, and it was one of several instances in which Buttigieg argued a rival’s policies were too extreme and overly vague. Buttigieg took the same route earlier in the debate when he confronted Sen. Elizabeth Warren on the subject of Medicare-for-all and argued that she was pushing a more progressive idea instead of focusing on other proposals that could also help expand health care coverage.

On both subjects, O’Rourke and Warren responded to the mayor by saying their focus on more ambitious policies was intended to be a stronger and more effective response to the respective issues of health care coverage and gun control. Warren argued that Buttigieg’s health care proposal, something he’s been referring to as Medicare-for-all-who-want-it, was actually only accessible to those who could afford it. O’Rourke, too, argued that more aggressive measures like a buyback would be necessary to curb gun violence.

The spirited discussion on the two topics marked moments where Buttigieg sought to differentiate himself as a moderate option and frame himself as a foil to other candidates onstage. Polling steadily in the middle of the pack, according to the RealClearPolitics polling average, Buttigieg needed a strong performance in Tuesday’s debate to further carve out a niche for himself.

Taking on O’Rourke — and Warren — was apparently part of that strategy.

The term Anarchy got bandied about a lot in the early 80’s, perhaps having some amount of political or social meaning attached at the outset, but by the first couple of years, it simply became a synonym for "blow shit up". Writers outdid themselves trying to imagine ways to create chaos and panic out of whatever household items they had available. How much of this destruction actually went on and how much was simply writing out angry missives about destruction, is unknown.

I wrote an essay about the meaning of the term "Anarchy" and how these files relate to that and the world at large.

The entirely stupid direction this country has taken regarding personal responsibility, freedom of expression and good ol’ self-preservation necessitates the following paragraph:

Before you waste one entire second even considering mixing, creating, or otherwise implementing the instructions in these files, be aware that people have died from some of these very texts, attempting wholescale explosives and dangerous chemical reactions based on some flimsy text file written by god knows who for god knows what. It’s just way too easy for someone to have typed a 5 instead of a 4 years and years ago when they were copying out of a badly photocopied pamphlet written by someone entirely different. Your life is too precious to take such an idiotic risk. If you’re going to blow things (and yourself) up, at least go the route of learning with experts, where you’ll become aware of risks and fun far beyond soaking tennis balls in gasoline and lighting them. OK?!
That aside, the justifications in some of the files are amazing, and a nice insight into the writer’s mind.

4.7 Magnitude San Andreas Fault Earthquake Rocks Central California

HOLLISTER (CBS SF) — A 4.7 magnitude earthquake rattled Central California Tuesday afternoon along the San Andreas fault line, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake struck at 12:42 p.m. about four miles south of Hollister near Tres Pinos in San Benito County and was felt as far north as San Jose. The quake was widely felt in Morgan Hill, Santa Cruz, the Monterey-Carmel area, Salinas, King City and Gilroy.

The initial quake was followed by a 2.6 magnitude aftershock at 12:55 p.m. The original magnitude was pegged at 4.8 until the USGS revised the reading shortly after.

The quake struck two days before the 30th annivesary of the deadly and devastating 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake which hit along the same fault line. The ’89 quake – which struck during Game 3 of the World Series between the Oakland A’s and San Francisco Giants – claimed 63 lives, injured nearly 4,000 and caused widespread damage.

“It was on the San Andres Fault just south of San Juan Bautista,” said Ann Marie Baltay of the USGS. “It’s a pretty typical event for the fault. It was very moderate ground motion.”

The San Benito County building has been evacuated as a precaution. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Baltay said she did not believe the 4.7 quake was a foreshock of a larger temblor.

“The San Andreas Fault was a major player in the 1989 6.9 quake … and also the 1906 event (San Francisco Great Quake),” she said. “The San Andreas is capable of a much larger event. This particular region we don’t think is any more likely to participate in a really large event. We don’t think this was a foreshock. “

“But there is always a chance there might be a larger event coming.”

KPIX 5 reporter Len Ramirez was in Santa Cruz when the quake struck.

“So I was sitting in a SUV shaking. I looked around. I thought it might be an earthquake,” he said. “There was no reaction from anyone on the sidewalk. Pacific Ave. is a very busy sidewalk. People just went about their business…It went on for about 30-50 seconds.”

But Stacy Pinkham said in her Santa Cruz neighborhood, the quake delivered quite a jolt. Santa Cruz also suffered heavy damage in the 1989 quake.

“It was a good shaker over in Santa Cruz!,” she posted to KION CBS 5 Facebook page.

Angie Ciolino agreed.

“Felt it good in Santa Cruz,” she posted.

Monterey’s Edward Ciliberti recalled the 1989 quake.

“I felt the 1987 big quake in SF down in Monterey and today’s felt much stronger,” he posted. “Perhaps because the epicenter in today’s quake was in the Pinnacles, much much closer to us.”

Greenfield’s Jessica Torres Vazquez commented on the rumbling sound that can precede a quake.

“What was the loud noise with the earthquake it sounded like a plane taking off so close it was weird,” she posted.

NASA’s new Artemis spacesuits make it easier for astronauts of all sizes to move on the Moon

NASA revealed new spacesuits, specifically created for the Artemis generation of missions, which aim to get the first American woman and the next American man to the surface of the Moon by 2024. The new design’s toppling feature is greater mobility and flexibility, in basically every respect. NASA unveiled both a full suit designed for use in extra-vehicular activities on the surface of the Moon, and a flight suit for use while in transit to lunar orbit.

Guided by NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine, the agency first demonstrated the suit that astronauts will use on the surface of the Moon (and, with modifications, eventually on Mars). It’s called the ‘xEMU’ variant, and it looks a lot like what you might think of when you imagine ‘space suit’ in your mind. But it’s quite different in many respects from what astronauts used to visit the surface of the Moon during the Apollo program.

It allows you to actually moonwalk, for instance: The original suit used for Moon-based activities actually only offered enough range of motion for Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to be able to essentially “bunny hop” on the lunar surface, in Bridenstine’s own words. This new design allows them to move around much more dynamically, including actually walking, and offering plenty of range of motion for their arms. Combined with new gloves that actually even allow astronauts to freely move their fingers, they can do things like pick up rocks off the lunar surface with relative ease.


The new spacesuit design is also designed to work with virtually everyone who could want to become an astronaut, with inclusive sizing that can accommodate anyone from the “first percentile female to the 99th percentile male,” according to Kristine Davis, an Advanced Space Suit Engineer at NASA and the person who demonstrated the xEMU variant of the suit on stage at the event on Tuesday.

“We want every person who dreams of going into space to be able to say to themselves, that yes, they have that opportunity,” Bridenstine added regarding the suit’s inclusive design.

Because NASA is also looking to ensure that this time when they return to the Moon, they do so sustainably (meaning with the intent of eventually setting up shop and staying), they also designed this suit with a much higher range of temperature variances to ensure it can serve at both the North and South poles of the Moon, as well as around the equatorial region. This xEMU suit is designed to survive temperature ranges from between -250 and +250 degrees Fahrenheit.



NASA also talked about how this is an improvement from the spacesuit currently used on the International Space Station. For one, this one has usable legs, where the legs on the ISS suits are essentially just for protection since you aren’t using them in zero and microgravity. The bearing designs used to connect the arms here also mean you have greater range of motion for reaching and grabbing, as mentioned.
The other suit, called the “Orion Crew Survival Suit,” is a much lighter suit that’s designed to be worn during take-off and landing. It’ll generally be depressurized when in use, but can provide protection in case of accidental depressurization. It was demonstrated by Dustin Gohmert, Project Manager on the Orion crew suit, who explained that it also has thermal protection and radiation protection, though not to the level of the xEMU.


The larger xEMU suit is also intentionally designed to be upgradeable, somewhat like a PC motherboard, and it’s designed so that it can be upgraded and worked on in space by the astronauts to adopt new and improved technologies as they become available, rather than having to be round-tripped back to Earth for updates.

Bridenstine re-iterated that NASA is also working with commercial partners on sourcing the production of the Artemis suits, as the agency announced earlier this month. It’s also looking to these companies to provide advice and input about what to do in terms of future evolutions and upgrades for the technology used in the suit.

Overall, Bridenstine was obviously eager to talk about commercialization, and NASA’s eagerness to work with commercial partners on the Artemis program, and on space in general.

“What NASA has already done is invested in commercial resupply of the International Space Station […] We have invested now in commercial crew. And in the first part of next year, we’re going to once again launch American astronauts on American rockets from American soil for the first time since the retirement of the Space Shuttles in 2011,” he said. “That’s going to be a really positive development for our country, but it’s going to be commercial […] And of course, we want to see a lot of robust commercial habitats in low-Earth orbit as well. Ultimately, what that enables us to do is then take the resources that the taxpayers give us, and go to the Moon and on to Mars, always keeping an eye on commercialization even there. The goal here is to expand humanity further into space than ever before.”

In addition to Challenges from Italy, USA, and Great Britain that were accepted during the initial entry period (January 1 to June 30, 2018), eight additional Notices of Challenge were received by the late entry deadline on November 30, 2018. Of those eight submittals, entries from Malta, USA, and the Netherlands were also accepted. Here’s the list:

Of the three late entries, only Stars+Stripes USA remains committed, but they still must complete the entry fee payment process before they will be eligible to race. They have already paid their initial payment but as a late entry challenger under the Protocol they also have a liability to pay a US$1million late entry fee due in installments by October 1, 2019. This deadline coincided with the venue schedule which has the construction of their team base beginning in late 2019, which we assume was done in the event the team is unable to fulfill their payment deadline. However, it is not yet confirmed if they have paid the fee.
