Roy Daniel McPeek, 86, was born in Athens, Ohio near Glouster to Ann Elizabeth Inman McPeek and Arthur Riley McPeek.

He grew up in Mansfield and other areas of Ohio, enjoying singing, dancing, and going to the movies with his friend and family. He spoke fondly of the good times he had with his cousins, and of the tutoring he received from his uncles in boxing, wrestling, and hunting.

When he graduated from high school, he had a college football scholarship, but the Korean conflict changed his plans. He enlisted into the United States Air Force and served until his honorable discharge.

At this point in his life he chose to go to The Ohio State University and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He was hired as a management trainee at J.C. Penny. On one of his days off he accepted a substitute teaching assignment in the school at which his wife was teaching.

Once again his life was dramatically changed. He liked teaching so much that he went back to The Ohio State University and earned his teaching certificate. This led to his 34-year career as an elementary, middle school and junior high school teacher.

Roy is survived by his wife of nearly 57 years, Virginia Lee (Osburn) McPeek; youngest son, Steven Arthur McPeek; granddaughter, Rhianna Leyden Kissinger; great-grandchildren, Aaron and Talon; brothers, Robert McPeek and David McPeek; and sister, Carol Boekamp. In addition to his parents Roy is preceded in death by his eldest son, Scott Lee McPeek; and his sister, Eudora (Trudy) McPeek.

Roy was retired for over 20 years during which time he enjoyed his passion for the old classical movies and westerns of his youth. He renewed his passion for sailing by taking and passing the seamanship course.

He and his wife, Virginia, also traveled both in the continental USA, Hawaii and abroad. They were active in three square dance clubs and could be seen going left allemande three to five times a week.

Roy lived a good full life. We will miss him.

Services will be held Friday, Oct. 21, 2016 at 2 p.m. at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond Street, Mansfield.
